Direct mass spectrometric analysis of naphthenic acids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in waters impacted by diluted bitumen and conventional crude oil

چکیده

Crude oil spills have well-documented, deleterious impacts on the hydrosphere. In addition to macroscopic effects wildlife and waterscapes, several classes of petroleum derived compounds, such as naphthenic acids (NAs) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), may be released into water present aquatic contamination hazards. The concentrations these contaminants affected by both type chemistry. We characterize NAs PAHs in natural constructed waters, spanning a range pH salinity, directly compare influence diluted bitumen (DB) conventional crude (CC) oil, using condensed-phase membrane introduction mass spectrometry (CP-MIMS) direct sampling, on-line technique. concentration isomer class profiles classical aqueous phase were assessed electrospray ionization negative-ion mode [M-H]? whereas PAH monitored liquid electron (LEI) positive-ion [M+•]. NA (0.03–25 ppm) highly pH-dependent, an order magnitude greater samples contaminated with DB than CC. Conversely, naphthalene (10–130 ppb) alkyl-naphthalenes (10–90 three four-fold higher exposed demonstrate that naturally occurring dissolved organic matter does not bias results from sampling approach employed, CC waters can differentiated principal component analysis distribution waters. Finally, we describe first demonstration concurrent trace same sample controlling perm-selectivity at spectrometer. techniques employed here for compounds applied rapid screening real-time monitoring remediation processes.

Partitioning of crude oil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aquatic systems.

This paper investigates the hypothesis that observed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in an aqueous system are equal to the sum of the organic phase and soluble phase molar concentrations. While the organic phase concentrations are proportional to the PAH mole fraction in the oil, the soluble phase molar concentrations are estimated using Raoult's law. A batch laboratory mix...

Dynamics of two methanogenic microbiomes incubated in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthenic acids, and oil field produced water

BACKGROUND Oil field produced water (OFPW) is widely produced in large volumes around the world. Transforming the organic matter in OFPW into bioenergy, such as biomethane, is one promising way to sustainability. However, OFPW is difficult to biologically degrade because it contains complex compounds such as naphthenic acids (NAs), or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Although active mic...

Bitumens and bitumen emissions, and some heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

1190 www.thelancet.com/oncology Vol 12 December 2011 In October, 2011, 16 experts from nine countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, to reassess the carcinogenicity of bitumens and their emissions, and of some N-heterocyclic and S-heterocyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These assessments will be published as Volume 103 of the IARC Mo...

Activation of the cnidarian oxidative stress response by ultraviolet radiation, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and crude oil.

Organisms are continuously exposed to reactive chemicals capable of causing oxidative stress and cellular damage. Antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutases (SODs) and catalases, are present in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes and provide an important means of neutralizing such oxidants. Studies in cnidarians have previously documented the occurrence of antioxidant enzymes (transcript ex...

Naphthenic Acids in Athabasca Oil Sands Tailings Waters Are Less Biodegradable than Commercial Naphthenic Acids

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are natural constituents in many petroleum sources, including bitumen in the oil sands of Northern Alberta, Canada. Bitumen extraction processes produce tailings waters that cannot be discharged to the environment because NAs are acutely toxic to aquatic species. However, aerobic biodegradation reduces the toxic character of NAs. In this study, four commercial NAs and the...
